Your Dream Holiday

It’s the right time to take a trip.

The Diamond of Tuscany

Etruscan in origin and even Ligurian before that, Lucca’s Roman history is apparent, with thistle  and decumanus still evident (via San Paolino and via Fillungo). Its name derives in all likelihood from a Ligurian Celtic word “Luck”, which means “Place of the Marshes”. Since ancient time the city was an important road network, especially during the Roman period, when it served as the intersection for the Clodia, Aurelia and Cassia roads.

Throughout its history, four different walls were built in Lucca. The walls of Lucca are the second longest in Europe (4,2 km/2,60 miles). Lucca’s city walls have eleven bastions, six main entrance gates, another three more ancient gates, and some secondary doors to exit the historical centre.

Lucca was one of the most famous producers of silk in the Western world from the end of  the 12th century. Vendors from all over the world came to Lucca to sell their products and buy these precious textiles. Thanks to this trade Lucca became an affluent and wealthy city.

The city walls, the important role in the silk market, its wealth, a highly capable diplomacy, and lastly, the fortune of not having been destroyed by the wars, are the key factors which allowed the city to preserve the splendour that we admire, and still enjoy today.
